Other reasons why it’s good to have caddies

At my club, we have a few older guys caddying. But the rest are local high school or college students. That makeup is not accidental; we wanted to cull most of our caddies (who, by the way, are not club employees but rather independent contractors) from those ranks. Yes, the younger caddies need more training. As a rule, they are not nearly as proficient as those veteran loopers (another term for caddies), and you have no hope of getting a good read on the green or accurate yardage from some of them. But by using those youths, and making sure that others do as well, we are doing something nice for our community. We’re giving summer employment to a couple dozen kids. We’re teaching them about the game of golf and giving them a chance to rub elbows with some very successful men and women in ways that may prove beneficial in the future, either in making important business contacts or just learning a thing or two about life. We’re providing a chance at advancement for many of them, and with our new caddie scholarship program, a chance for financial aid when they head off to college. And finally, we’re forging relationships with local individuals that may last a lifetime.

There are several former caddies from my club that stay in touch with members. A number of old loopers have secured good corporate jobs through the connections they made with members on the golf course. Yet they still come back to their roots. For example, I saw three or four old caddies, some of whom now work for big companies, come back to carry for our club championships last year. These guys didn’t have to, but they still have great memories of their old summer job and some of the people they used to work for. And being in their 20s, they figured they could always use the extra money. It also made a lot of the members at our club feel very good a couple of years ago when two of our old caddies were invited back to play in our big member-guest golf tournament.
